New York’s famous monumental structures are well known for their exteriors: Grand Central Terminal (1913, Reed & Stem, Warren & Wetmore), the neo-Gothic Woolworth Building (1913, Cass Gilbert) and the New York Public Library (1911, Carrère & Hastings) are just some of the best-known examples. But what does it look like behind the exterior of these gigantic buildings? Did you know, for example, that beneath Bryant Park there are 40 miles of book shelves? Or that in the nether regions of Grand Central Terminal there are platforms on which presidents once arrived, along with elevators that connect directly to the Waldorf Astoria hotel? New York backstage: familiar landmark buildings present their interior.
